After 74 hours of production downtime, the Nexperia Philippines Inc. Workers Union has ended the strike with significant victories.
The strike was declared on Wednesday, March 5, following numerous negotiations, as the company’s management was offering a daily wage increase of only PHP 17 ($0.30), a raise far below the union’s demand of PHP 50 ($0.87) despite the high productivity of the workers, who are currently producing around seven million microchips daily.
The workers’ action forced the management to reopen negotiations, after the company reportedly lost ₱1.26 billion in profits due to the nearly four-day strike.
What has been achieved?
According to the union, the strike has secured the company’s commitment to:
- Reinstate two workers who were illegally dismissed, including the Union President, Mary Ann Castillo.
- A wage increase of ₱50, implemented over three years, as demanded by the union.
- Protect workers on strike from retaliation.
As the union states, this strike has made history by challenging the Department of Labor’s Assumption of Jurisdiction and Return-to-Work order, and overcoming food and medicine blockades, harassment, and attempts to break the picket line. However, the fight continues for the reinstatement of two more dismissed leaders and the right for all workers to unionize and strike.
SETEM Catalunya supports the union and demands the reinstatement of the two unfairly dismissed union leaders.
